Easy! I can even give a topical example - pictures of the shuttle launch.
You don't see vast expanses of blue sky above the shuttle, you have the
craft itself near the top so you can see the (relatively still) vapour trail.

I haven't looked at enough pictures to say whether or not exceptions like
this only apply for vertical motion... 

In an unrelated note, might I suggest that this mailing list filter out
HTML and multipart messages?
