Is it even possible to move the masks in projection?!  Projection is very
limiting in some respects, which is why I wish more folks could begin with
prints before getting constrained by projection and its peculiarities. 
Check Ferwerda's book and you will see that he demonstrates the window
concept with an illustration of the masks moving in and out, not the
images. This is the window in principle - the projection situation is an
imperfect compromise that distracts from what the window really is about,
IMO.  Principle first, then practicality, is my order of preference - but
many of you have spotted that tendency already... ;-)
