It does have a physical border and that is the window aperture
created by the mount - or the edge of the image.

I see the mountains move closer to me.
Let me try this on you. Assume you have a close-up of a flower in a
vase in front of a wall. Total depth of the scene is less than three
feet. Instead of mounting this slide with the front flower just behind
the window, I push the window back so that the flower now comes
through. Are you saying you also see this as the window getting
bigger?
I see the stereo window just like I see a real window. It is fixed in
place and the scene moves from in front - to at - to in back of it.
