P3D Stereo Projection

Well George makes some interesting points. But I seem to recall the
1970s very well as I am an aging baby-boomer. I recall when slide film
was very popular and slide projectors were hot items in department
stores. (Just like super 8 movie stuff was at that time.) If anyone has
gone to Walmart or K-Mart or any larger store that has a photo booth
you will see the milestone of change if you look close. Most of the film
sold, if not all, is print film. Slide film languishes on the shelf and
usually expires before its sold. Slide projection is no longer popular
with the general public for similar reasons why stereo projection was
a failure with the public. (only some of the reasons!) Its a hassle
to setup the gear and usually brings about groans from visitors who
don't want to sit thru a show. Add to that the problems with stereo
alignment/mounting and you have a recipe for failure. So I don't think
the Realist stereo type photography will ever enjoy the popularity it
had back in the 1950s again given the current trend in public
snap-shooting print film and the ready availability of one-hour cheap
processing.
One other interesting note is that last year most pro photographers
were using "chromes" for commercial work. That trend is being replaced
by digital rapidly. The white-house press core has mostly already made
the switch except for a few wise hold-outs. So the future of slide
film may be in doubt as well. I hope not!
The funny part about this entire debate is that anyone I show my
stereo slides to are surprized and "amazed" at the quality of the
pics. (I am no great photographer) Its just that these same folks
have never seen 3d before. When they question me about what it takes
to do 3d, they lose interest quickly. Operating the clunky Realist takes
dedication! Todays cameras make it so easy anyone can take reasonable
snap shots. Hand them a Realist and the smile quickly fades!
So I maintain I will enjoy this hobby. But its just that, a hobby and
not a pulpit from which I will preach 3d to the masses.
  Next stop, 2 1/4 square 3d.
