That's true for me too!  My first Stereo Realist slide of my
wife Liz standing face on in front (mid-way between the wall and
myself) in our apartment building in Evanston, gave me a very
strong cardboarding impression.  

I believe beginners in 3d notice this cardboarding easier than
seasoned stereo photographers.

In explaining this effect, the question has been raised "why do
we sense cardboarding in 3d images and not in real life?"  John
B has discussed this question in great lengths a few years ago. 
His theory had to do with ability or inability to resolve
stereoscopic displacements.  I think there are many factors in
play here, many of them phycological.
