Believe me, you should get a flash meter if you want
to shoot with multiple flashes.  It will be worth
every penny in time and film wasted.  You can get the
Polaris flash meter for around $200 new.  It is a
great digital flash meter.  I prefer the Sekonic L508,
but it costs about twice that.

Using 2 vivitar flashes and a $15 slave, all of them
on cheap tripods, was how I shot all of my photos
before I got the monolight strobes.  In fact most of
the images currently on my site were shot that way.

The only other way I have used my Vivitar 285's was by
using them on automatic, then reading what to set the
F/stop at from the flashes.
