[photo-3d] "Cardboarding" revisited

I'd like to revisit the issue of "cardboarding", which was under
discussion here a few weeks back.
Several list members have commented on the fact that their early
experience with 3D left a strong impression of flat planes. This was
also MY first impression when looking into a Red Button viewer,
although those images now look more natural to me.
Often, when I show 'beginners' either slides or videos, they mention
the 'cut-out' effect. After time, that appearance changes for them.
I've had some thoughts about why this may be, and would like to hear
opinions from the group.
I am coming to believe that the perceptual evolution we experience is
based upon the fact that viewing artificial 3D involves UNCOUPLING
'vergence' and 'accomodation'. No matter where our lines of sight
converge, our focus remains steady, at the distance of the slide,
print or screen upon which the image is displayed. This is quite
different from how we see the 'real world', and it takes some practice
getting used to it.
Intuitively, it seems to me that 'accomodation' is a more subtle
muscle movement than 'vergence'. Yet, it is clearly a depth cue.
With two different depth perception indicators contradicting each
other, "cardboarding" may be the brain's initial inability to resolve
the discrepancy. With time, we learn to reinterpret the experience.
(I still think that there are additional color issues involved with
anaglyph "cardboarding", but even there, vergence and accomodation
give contradictory cues.)
Sincerely,
Ray Hannisian
