I haven't scanned one lately, but if I put one in the flatbed scanner
and gently press on the top of the unit when scanning, the card
is flattened out -- and when releasing the lid, it just pops back
up.  Of course, later I found that even left curved, it still scanned
pretty well (the scanner's tiny lens system must be f/million  or so,
DOF is pretty deep -- which makes sense seeing as how it's lit pretty
brightly to work) although I'd assume there's a tiny bit of theoretical
distortion.  Is the photosmart s20 one of the feeder-types, or is it
a flatbed?

P.S. - Being an engineer, I'd suspect the card's curve is either due to an
          original process problem that was marketed as intentional to
          fix it ("if you can't fix it, feature it"  -old engineering proverb),
          or something like the stacking theory mentioned previously
          (sounds VERY plausible).
