     If you have ever looked at early papers on optics, written in the
mid-1800's, the state of knowledge at the time was that the back of the
retina is concave..and the lens is, for all intents and purposes, flat.
So, to "correct for the distortion," I'm GUESSING that someone tried
making the card image convex.. and it became popular.
    If the technology were available, I would also guess that someone
might have even tried to make the card hemispheric !
