I'm not sure I understand your question, but I believe that
by using the mounting gauge, I can ensure that there is
no rotational error anyway.
Just so we're using the same terminology, by rotational
error I mean a condition where the (nominally horizontal)
line between two image points on one chip is not parallel
to the line between the same two image points on the
other chip. Rotational error (at least for images taken with
a Realist) is a mounting error, whereas tilt is a camera
positioning artifact that is an error only if the photographer
meant to have the camera level. Rotational error is
extremely uncomfortable to view and should be avoided at
all costs.
Tilt however, quite distinct from rotational error, may or
may not be objectionable, as you suggested. If it is, then
it can be eliminated using the method I described. Rotate
both chips by the amount needed to bring what should be
horizontal into a position parallel to the bottom and top of
the mount's openings. The gauge helps ensure that the
rotations are equal. Then move either of the chips
vertically until the window frames are congruent. The
latter adjustment eliminates vertical mounting error, but
introduces technically but almost always imperceptibly a
slight error that in my opinion is much more acceptable
than the tilt error I was trying to eliminate in the first place.
My whole point is that IF I want to remove the tilt during
mounting, I can't do it if I'm using a jig or pin-enabled
RBTs. Sorry if this twisted description puts a bad slant
on things. :)
