Greetings,

Although I haven't tried it in my FED yet (couple Mercury batteries
in the freezer still left, and my FED is very unlikely to be used
very much anymore), I've used hearing-aid zinc-air batteries
to replace mercury ones in other cameras and it has worked well
(other than the battery expiring faster than a mercury one would
have -- but at least the hearing-aid ones are very inexpensive
at Costco).

I vaguely recall the voltages are about the same, regardless
of what's written (1.35 vs 1.4). I think I posted actual voltage
measurements a few years ago.

Most FED's I've heard of underexpose "by default" (mine was
an exception, seemed to be right-on). If the 1.55V silver oxide
makes it overexpose, my question is whether it did so with your
"standard" ASA "correction" for underexposure. In other words,
if the ASA dial is set to that of the film, does the 1.55V battery
still overcompensate? Has one tried to just "correct" the ASA
dial the other way instead (and have it work in a roughly linear
manner for different light levels)?

Mike K.

P.S. - If available hearing-aid batteries aren't of the right
size, some hardware washers can easily fix that!! :-)
