I know these boxes... I have a half dozen of them
in my basement.  It is difficult to find one that
is in good condition.  I tried putting the camera
and, as you said, there is space to move around.

In my first printing of my Realist book I included
a copy of a Realist advertising flier.  In it you
can see this box, photographed open, with viewer
and camera in place.  The camera does not have a case
and I am sure this is how it was sold (no extra box,
no case, just floating inside).

Here is the information under the picture:

V1041 - Stereo REALIST "41" Camera and 2061 Stereo Viewer .... $148.75
V1042 - Stereo REALIST "42" Camera and 2061 Stereo Viewer .... $178.75

In the same flier (dated 1/3/57) the camera alone is listed 
for $129 (1041) or $159 (1042) while the red button viewer
is listed for $19.75.  So the price of the "kit" is equal
to the price of the parts, with the box being given for
free.

(Interesting how the 2.8 Realist which is the 1042 is not
much more than the 3.5... today it sells for 3-5 times more)

The case (2506) was sold extra for $12.50.

There is an option to buy one camera, one case, one flash
and two red button viewers, for a price that is not much
less than the sum of the parts.
