Rotating an ordinary beamsplitter would NOT work.  Then you would just get 
top and bottom images instead of left and right.  The prism unit uses 
prisms and mirrors to take left and right images and rotate them 90 degrees 
on the film.  The viewer then does the reverse.  I don't know how good this 
unit actually is, but the idea is interesting.

Lots of camera makers have right-angle eyepieces available as optional 
accessories.
