I've been using an HP PhotoSmart scanner (the original, not the s20) to
scan my Realist slides to put on my web page, and lately I've been having
a problem where the RGB elements of the image aren't registered correctly
in the horizontal direction. If there is a small white area in the image
I get a green dot then a blue dot then a red dot from left to right in my
final scan. I have to go into PhotoShop and move the red and green color
layers to line up with the blue layer to get even a decent image.

I e-mailed HP and received the following reply, but it didn't seem to
help. I wonder if any of you using this scanner have had this problem and
how you fixed it. The next line of support from HP is the $25 per call
support...

I appreciated the comment a few days ago that this scanner would accept
glass mounted slides. I've always un-glassed them first, but after that
comment I pushed a little harder and found that they will indeed go in
alright.

Thank you for contacting Hewlett-Packard's Customer Care.

We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

There is an internal mechanism in your HP PhotoSmart Photo Scanner
called a Focus Offset Bar. This bar will block the light path of the
reflected image of a slide. If this bar is stuck it will not block the
reflective light path completely which causes red and green shadowing on
images.

To solve this issue you will need to turn your scanner over so that the
bottom side is up and it is resting on its top. Cycle through each of
the scanner modes, letting the scanner change to each mode and stop.
Turn the scanner right-side up and try scanning again. Repeat this
process until you have corrected the issue.
