Being based in the UK I also came across this problem, with the added
complication that the Post Office apparently no longer supply International
Money orders (when I asked why they replied "..because theres no demand"!)
Anyway I usually buy American Express Travellers Cheques instead. These
can be made payable to the seller and only (s)he can cash them (for free).
They MUST be paid into a bank account and I'm covered for loss or fraud,
they
only cost two pounds fifty (compared to around 7 pounds for a money
transfer)
to convert any amount (possibly the exchange rate they apply also includes
some commission ?). The downside is that the smallest denomination they
sell is £20..

I've been looking at the www.bidpay.com site and its sounds interesting,
the
$5 charge is more than the commision+postage of me sending travellers
cheques
BUT the payments gets there quicker, I can do it all from my PC and I can
pay
the exact amount (no more $20 multiples and relying of the seller to send
change). Next time I win a bid I may give it a go.
