Good flash is essential to good 3D in dark places and dark
places (like caves) cry out for stereo so it is not off topic.

Yes, you can use the auto feature of many flashes. Simply make
sure your camera and all your flashes are set the same and are
not overshooting their maximum distance.
When I use Vivitar 283's for big rooms I set it at the f4 auto
setting which makes it good out to about 30 feet (assuming ASA
100 film) in perfect conditions (in a dark lava tube it works
out to only about 20 feet). Now just make sure the subject you
are lighting is 30 feet or closer. You can have one flash 10
feet from one subject and another flash 20 feet from another
subject, etc. and get them all lit properly.
Of course, I mainly use bulbs for the big shots and for that
you must calculate and set the flashes the appropriate
distance from the subject.
You do need to make sure to not overlap the flash too much as
you will get hot spots.
All this talk about cave stereo photography has me anxious to
go, but the bats are still hibernating and we can't disturb
them for about another month *{;-(
That's all for now,
