Welcome to the club! I will briefly tell you how I do these
jobs and also enlarge slides, improve exposure or color
balance, create special effects by copying slides in
negative base (used to make slides out of negatives, but
I use in reverse), copy "sandwich" slides, and other tricks.

I use my trusty Minolta X700 camera, a macro lens and
the Minolta Auto Bellows III and associated accessories,
the most important of which is the slide copying unit.

Right now I have the entire set in ebay and I posted a
sell-3d notice. Here is the link if you would like to
take a look:

With the bellows and macro lens I can make very sharp
copies at a variety of magnifications. For magnifications
higher than 1x, the lens must be reversed. This is done
very easily with these bellows by rotating the front end.

The slide copying unit will take 2x2s or uncut film but
I have managed to copy mounted stereo slides without much
trouble. The unit will move in two directions, allowing
you to control cropping.

This takes care of equipment. You also need to worry about
film and lighting. You can use ordinary slide or negative
film for these jobs. You will end up with more contrast,
which is something you might want in certain pictures but not
want in others. If you don't want the extra contrast you
will need to use special duplicating or internegative film
(the first one is for copying slides, the second for making
negatives from slides). There are two types of films: One
is balanced for Tungsten light and the other for electronic
flash. Most duplicating films need some kind of color
correction. You must buy color-correcting filters and
experiment (the filters go behind the slide, between the
slide and the light source).

I have just scratched the surface here.... Once you get
started with a specific setup, EXPERIMENT and take good
notes!!!
