Yes - transferring over from my other main list (The Oregon Trail),
the iron rims on wagon wheels were frequently referred to as "tires".
They typically would be much thinner than the hoops in the picture,
though, and indeed made of metal... I'll ask on the OCTA list to 
see if anybody knows.
