George,
While there are those who think auto focus is just the
money, even with a twin SLR stereo rig, there are others,
like me, who prefer to do as we always did before the days
of auto focus - we simply figure the distance and depth of
the zone in which we estimate the action will be happening
and PRE-FOCUS. In fact, with the type of action that I like
to shoot, I like to put the centre of focus 1/3 into the estimated
zone of focus and just take stereos. Besides, all my gear is
from the pre-auto-focus era anyhow and I don't intend to go
buy new stuff. On top of that, I don't believe that focusing on
the front of a plane gives one the best depth-of-focus range.
Even with 135mm lenses and the action centre-of-focus at say
60 ft to 80 ft, stere is quite nice dof at say f5.6 or f6.3.
But then, the above is only my opinion. Auto-focus fans are
entitled to believe that the latest gear has to be better, even
with stereo.
