I couldn't agree with you more.  Even when buying brand new equipment for my 
photography business, I've learned that there is just no such thing as a 
camera that is ideal for every situation.  Since the XR-10M's are medium size 
SLR's and most often placed side by side on a bar, the interocular distance 
is about 6".  Not the ideal setup for close-up people shots, although I'm 
often amazed at how close I can get to my foregrounds, especially with a 
little smidgen of (gasp) toe-in.  I always carry a vintage stereo camera for 
situations in which they excel.  I don't shoot much stereo of the kind you 
describe since I have no kids or grandkids (that I know of) :).
