I tend to side with the pre-focus group.  Even shooting kids running
around at a family gathering.  I tend to pre-focus my Kodak stereo and
get great shots of the kids running around.  Pre-focusing a pair of 35mm
cameras isn't much different than this.  Set your f-stop and pre-focus
in your f-stop range and shoot.  Then shoot, keeping in mind your
distance limits.  And, if you're worried about missing a shot, shoot
lots of film.  After all, IMHO, film is cheaper than missing an
opportunity.
