There are esoteric formulas out there that will give you the answer, but
pragmatically, here's what has worked for me: Start with the stereo rule of
thumb -- i.e., that the distance between the two lens positions should be
about 1/30 the distance from the camera lens to the nearest meaningful
foregound element of the subject. For example, if you are six inches away,
slide your camera over .2 inch. Then "bracket" the distance, meaning take
three or four shots at different distances, on both sides of the 1/30
distance. When you get your film back, choose the pair that pleases you best.
