Update to my last post with regards to Oliver Dean's question.

Okay this was bugging me so I went and checked my copy of Amazing 3-D by
Hal Morgan & Dan Symmes. Lo and behold on page 103 was the image I
remember seeing. The caption says,...

Alfred Hitchcock with the giant telephone used in the filming of Dial
M for Murder. In order to make 3-D close-up shots with the background
scenes in focus, Hitchcock used several giant props. A huge finger was
built to dial thsi telephone.

The image in the book shows Hitchcock dialing a number on the oversized
phone.
