I recall reading someplace that there was an oversized model of a
telephone used for the stereoscopic telephone closeups, thereby avoiding
problems with the minimimum lens separation, which was still too large
for an extreme close up.  Can anyone authoritatively confirm this?  (Ray
Zone, maybe?)

Yes, there was a large telephone built for Dial M for Murder.  There 
is a classic photo of Hitchcock posing with this phone on page 103 of 
"Amazing 3-D" by Symmes & Morgan (Little, Brown: 1982).
