I believe this is incorrect.  The system does not provide you with a
password to gain access via web interface.  I believe (and it's been a
while since I've set up a group) that the system sends a confirmation
message to you indicating that you were signed up on a mailing list. 
You then reply to that message indicating that it was indeed you who
signed up and not someone signing you up for a gazillion mailing lists.

Of course, as always, if my interpretation is incorrect, I will admit my
ignorance of the situation and publicly state such at a later date.

P.S. It's hard for me to tell at this point as I was already a member of
Onelist/Egroups prior to the move from Calcite.  Still, my mail archives
show the last digest I received from Calcite and the first eGroup
message.  There's no "system" message indicating that I was added to
eGroup.  This too is possible using the "bulk address add w/o asking"
feature.
