[photo-3d] Re: NSA workshop schedules

You want schedules? Here is what I know. This is pasted in from MSWord and
I disclaim any responsiblity for weird line breaks :-) The presenters all
give of their time at the convention to share their knowledge and hard work
with fellow NSA members. After thanking them, start now to make your own
contribution next year!
Yea, these workshops conflict with all kinds of things - but come back next
year if you have to miss something. The NSA is a multi-ring circus with lots
to do and see, regardless of your particular 3D interests.
Bill Moll
Workshop coordinator
PS: On the NSA Mesa registration form, the "filet of rat" selection for the
Saturday night banquet menu option was a typo.
Workshop listing (always check the registration desk for the final schedule).
Friday 12 noon/projection lunch break
George Themelis and David Kesner
Stereo Slide Mounting
This workshop will explain the basic principles of stereo slide mounting and
will review the equipment (mounts and mounting supplies) available for the
job. Examples of mounting errors will be demonstrated in stereo projection.
with slides showing examples of some things that can go wrong. It will also
demonstrate the application of a RBT jig with Spicer mounts.
Friday 2 PM
George Freeman
The Aesthetics of Stereo Card Making
The workshop will review the history of the Holmes-Bates format stereo card
and the making of its elements, with illustrated examples.
Friday 3 PM
David Lee
Advanced Techniques in Stereocard Making
Includes getting your negatives or slides enlarged to the right size, using a
jig to trim the prints to the right size, and making a logo and/or title on
the front and description on the back using your computer.
Friday 4 PM
George Themelis
The Ins and Outs of Stereo Slide Viewers
How to select, use, maintain and improve your stereo slide viewer. Details
on the optical, mechanical and electrical systems of viewers. Tips on
batteries, transformers, light bulbs, cleaning electrical contacts, replacing
lenses and enlarging apertures for wide slide formats. A variety of viewers
will be available for demonstration and hands-on display. Jacob Van Ekeren
will demonstrate his new high quality stereo slide print viewers. He will
talk a bit about his work and have his viewers on display.
Friday 5 PM
Dr. Bert Zuckerman
Photographers of Palestine
This workshop will discuss 19th century stereo photographers in Palestine.
Bert, Steve Kiesling and Baseem El Habri (from the Arab Emirates) will lead
an informal discussion of some of rare Mideast photographers (i.e. Cramb,
Finsterlein and Armenian photographers). There will be15 min slide
presentation, followed by a discussion of the general field. This will
include material in addition to Bert's article on Bergheim, which is to
appear in Stereoworld
Saturday 1 PM
Tom Deering
Digital Restoration of Stereo Views
The cost of technology keeps going down while quality and speed keep rising.
Today, digital image restoration is within the grasp of many people. Cracks
and blemishes can be erased, and color can be restored. Stereo images that
were considered ruined or un-viewable can be brought back to life.
This is a live demo. Tom will work with actual images and show the results
in stereo. At the end, Tom will show how these same techniques can be used
to make 3D images from a 2D original. Bring your polarized glasses.
Saturday 2 PM
Dan Shelley
Anaglyph Creation
Topics covered will include the basic steps, including references to
procedures in specific photo editing packages. The workshop will also
discuss how to avoid "Ghosting" and the importance of rotation control.
Additional topics will be window violations on purpose and whatever else
comes up. There will also be a brief introduction into the ideas behind 2D
to 3D conversions.
Saturday 3 PM
Tom Deering
Creating Worlds in 3D
This workshop will show how Strata 3D can be used to make sophisticated
stereoscopic renderings and animations. Strata 3D is a *distant* relative to
the software that created movies like "Toy Story". Tom will show how to
render scenes with realistic shadows, surfaces, textures and reflections.
The software, which has a stereo camera with adjustable geometry, once cost
$700. It is now
distributed on the Internet for free. People who attend the workshop will
get a free CD containing the Mac and PC versions of the software
Tom has used this software for five years, and is currently a beta tester.
He will show some examples of his images and animations in polarized stereo.
Tom will show you how you can create your own worlds in stereoscopic 3D.
Saturday 4 PM
David Lee
Camera Separation in Stereo Photography
Will primarily address questions from the audience, but may include things
like getting the right camera separation in hyper-stereo, photographic
techniques (such as improving sharpness, choosing films), composition,
exhibiting large stereo images in galleries, printing your own stereo images,
using black and white and infrared films, and making close-ups. David will
also discuss the theory and techniques behind his award-winning hypers.
