Sounds like the 35mm photos were taken "hyper" (lens spacing too far).

P.S. - What 35mm have your friends seen?  Have they been
       shown something properly representative of 35mm can do!  Using
       a realist isn't the "ultimate" 35mm where MF is the next step,
       as suggested perhaps by the subject line....
       that'd almost be like saying the Sputnik is the ultimate MF camera,
       and judging by the MF group, I don't think that's your position. :-)
       Ask Dr.-T about his using a de Wijs Comby to look at Provia 100F images
       taken in his S1.
