Sorry to hear about your problems. A trip up to Mystic Seaport in
Connecticut which just happened to coincide with an event for wood
boats produced some of my favorite stereo pairs.

Which event did you go see? I don't see South Carolina on the port
list for Op Sail 2000. Op Sail 2000 will be in cities along the East
Coast through July.

Scanning and digital reassembly is probably the best you can hope for.
You'll need to find someone that can deal with scanning the damaged
film. If you get high resolution drum scans done you could later take
the files to have new negatives made with a film recorder.

You might want to put "DO NOT CUT/DO NOT MOUNT" labels on the film
cartridges.

When I was mailing 35mm slide film to Qualex/Kodalux in addition to
requesting no mounting I also asked for hand processing. This was for
astrophotography (where the frame edges are very hard to see).
Eventually I trusted them to hand mount the astrophotos and they never
screwed up.

Perhaps you should try and find a local professional lab. After
bouncing between a couple I found a good lab with OK prices (less than
$3.50 (tax included) to develop one roll of 120 E-6) and quick turn
around (2 hours). Usually I drop off on the way to work or at lunch
and pick up on the way home or the next day.

You could watch Futurama to find out.
