[photo-3d] Scanning slides

I know this topic has come up before, but I don't recall our having found
any good solutions. Is there any way to get good scans of Realist slide,
other than by using a dedicated slide scanner? I was thinking there should
be some way to "project" the image onto the scanner. For example, suppose
you put some rear projection (e.g., ground glass) on the scanner bed, and
then projected the image onto that. Would the scanner's own illumination
wipe out the project image?

Thanks,

-pd
