This is in fact a similar device, and I bought a $200 or so UMAX one back 
when I first got the UMAX scanner. I was VERY dissapointed with the results. 
The problem was not the "light lid", but the scanners inability to read the 
slide data correctly. This is what I was trying to point out about the 
Microtek one - it is built to better handle transparencies.

I have scanned items that were as much as 3 " off the glass with no 
problems. I have not tested to see how far I can stretch that.
