First, thanks to all who've posted information on slide scanners and
provided scanned examples.  I was quite impressed both with Dan's scans
and with Dick Twichell's.

I have an Acerscan 620ST (s=scsi, t=transparency) which has the light
lid built in.  I have been quite disappointed in this scanner.  The
slide scans have come out blurry or fuzzy, definitely not in focus. 
This has not been the case with print scanning.  My prints have come out
sharp and colorful.

So, I may investigate the Epson 636 and/or the Microtek ScanMaker X6
with light lid.  As for what to do with your old scanner?????  Well,
that's what eBay is for! :-)
