Sorry to be confusing.  Through my job, I have used a number of
scanners. Many (quite a few, actually) use Selfoc lenses.  These
lenses have some nice properties but they have an amazingly short
depth of field.  They work great for copying paper that is flat
on the glass but anything off the glass is blurry.

Dan has described some nice things that he has done with his
scanner.  I would guess that many readers of this list would
like to do the same things the he had done.  The question becomes
how do I find a scanner that can scan slides or 3-D objects placed
on the glass?  One criterion for elimination of a particular model
of scanner is the existance of Selfoc lenses in the image path of
that scanner.
