This may sound like another of my famously idiotic statements but:

rent a white car!


No fooling!  Get the lightest colour car you can...the boot of a white saloon 
(sorry, trunk of a sedan) will stay considerably cooler than that of a dark 
car.  You still have the greenhouse effect to deal with (from the passenger 
compartment) but every little bit will help to preserve the ice in the cooler.
