I know you've thought of this - but for still subjects (and
experiments), you can use sequentials - I have made models and rotated
them on a stage (a record player is good).  Stereo purists ( 8*) ) might
want to shift (translate) the camera rather than rotate the subject or
move around it.

The other alternative for experimentation is to generate models on the
computer using povray, strata-3d(?), openGL etc, and to use successive
camera positions. (I've played with that, too).
