Not an expert, but my understanding:
Halogen bulbs are warmer than 5000 K. Most fluorescent bulbs are
cooler than 5000 K. The light from the new ultra-thin light panels
use color-corrected CCFL ("cold cathode fluorescent") light tubes
and are exceptionally accurate.

There are a lot of personal preference and relative perceptive
issues involved, but for measurable accuracy a color corrected
CCFL light source is your best bet, IMO. Some makers of home-
made viewers have used CCFL components to make their own light
boxes. Reports I have received from comparison tests, however,
indicate that the off-the-shelf components do not produce the
same high quality light as the commercially made "light panels."

I think of "Cabin" as the name that made the new light panels
famous. Distributed in the U.S. by Mamiya, the Cabin models
are pricey. RMM offers several models similar to the Cabin
at up to 1/2 off the price of the Cabin. Contact me off-list
