Paul,
This is pretty much the same experience I had when I mounted my first
pair.  If you use a light table you should be able to cut the film chips
with scissors.  However, my mounting got much faster and much more
accurate with a film cutter.  I found mine (a generic film cutter) on
eBay and marked it at the proper cutting length for 5p.

I understand that the actual Realist film cutters have a sprocket which
will advance the film just the right length.
