Jack Feldman asks for advice on exposing the background with a flash on a
Realist.

Any auto-flash will expose for the subject, quenching itself when it sense
light reflected from the subject and leaving the background under-exposed.
What you need to do to compensate for that is to set your shutter speed to
expose for the background with ambient light alone. That way, the main
subject is lit by the flash and the background has the benefit of the longer
exposure. By the way, I use a Vivitar 283 and find that I can routinely
expose at f/11 or f/16 with no problem.
