What is are the aperture options for automatic with asa 100 film for the
Sunpack 383 Super? The Vivitar 283 gives you 4 auto ranges, with f11,
f8,f4, and f2.8 as options with asa 100 film, up to 10, 15, 30 or 40
feet repectively at each of the color coded auto ranges. Sometimes
flashes of the same strength still don't give the smaller aperture
options such as f11 unless you go to manual.
Is the Sunpack 383 Super similarly priced to the Vivitar 283? The lower
weight and bulk would be nice. Does it use 4 AA bateries like the
Vivitar?
The Vivitar 283 is widely available on the used market, ebay selling
prices recently ranging from $36 to $60, the high end of the range being
pretty close to the new discount price at B & H. I would advise anyone
buying a used one to make sure that the synch cord is included, as this
is often lost. The synch cord would be necessary if you want to use this
flash with an adaptor (on an unmodified Realist or Revere hot shoe), and
I think replacement cost for a Vivitar synch cord is around $15 or so.
Or about this for an additional stacking adaptor for using any flash
that doesn't have a synch cord. -Linda
