In my opinion, an automatic camera in the hands of a knowledgeable
photographer is a plus because he will know when to trust the camera and when
not to. He can use the automation to his advantage. The same system in the
hands of a novice who gives the camera free reign will yield a high
percentage of failed shots.

It's analogous to the use of a light meter. Blindly follow the meter
readings and you will get many badly exposed pictures. Know how to interpret
the readings and the success increases.

No degree of automation will ever make the novice equal to the knowledgeable
photographer. Which is a damn good thing for those of us who make a living
taking pictures!
