[photo-3d] Re: Kodachrome survey

I know I've said that Kodachrome 200 is both grainy and sharp! :-)
I've also run a lot of it through my Nimslo.

As for film's survival, in today's specialty market there is
no doubt in my mind that it will survive. Someone, somewhere
will want film for its unique qualities (who knows what _kind_
of film will still be made--I would say slides, since they
have the directness I speak of below--slide shooters are
people with very specialized, individualized tastes--it is the
mass market negative field that will be invaded by digital),
in the same way that some people still prefer records to tape or
CD's--they are still being made, and the turntables to play
them--it is true that they deliver, as analog devices, a truer
waveform than digital media, which is detectable to some people's
ears. Personally, I'm glad to trade the slight loss in order to
get the CD's freedom from noise and virtual freedom from
damage by scratches or wearing out. But for photography I
prefer the absolute directness of slides--the image goes onto
a piece of film, which is what you actually look at (I also
use digital where it gives me an advantage, as for fast
transfer of images from reality to Web site, or for retouching
scans of slides for casual pictures--640X480X256). And the slides
don't have the noise and wear problems that analog disk sound
recordings do. To me, the simplicity and "punch" of stereo Kodachromes
simply can't be beat.
