Spicer mounts are plain cardboard but precision cut foldover mounts that
do not have any adhesive so need to be tape sealed, or some people like
to apply their own glue. The outer dimension is the standard 41x101mm
size with various size film opening options for different formats
including 4perf for Nimslo, 5perf for Realist, 7perf for European
format, extra wide for full frame, and also some reduced width and
reduced height options etc for cropping and/or adjusting the stereo
window for closeups in 5p or 7p formats. They are sold by Paul Talbot at
Rocky Mountain Memories http://www.rmm3d.com/ They do not have little
tabs for lining up the film chips so are a little harder to use, but the
technique of using a modified plastic RBT mount as a mounting aid has
been discussed on this list and this makes it much easier.
Currently produced "normal heatseals" have some problems with the mount
not being very opaque, and specifically there is light leakage through
the areas where the tabs are for aligning the chips. Also they don't
give as smooth an edge on the apertures as the Spicers. I think the
heatseals are only available in 5perf size. Reel 3d and Dalia Miller
carry them, I believe.
As many of you who got samples from Paul Talbot know, he is working on
some new heat seal mounts without these problems, and also some
self-stick mounts so no heat or glue or tape will be needed. -Linda
