For Immediate Release:
The September 2000 issue of American Cinematographer magazine includes a
feature article by Ray Zone titled "Larger Than Life" which is about the
IMAX 3-D film "Cirque du Soleil Journey of Man" currently in release.
For this article Zone completed extensive research and interviews with
the film's director Keith Melton, directors of photography Reed Smoot, ASC
and John Hora, ASC as well as the 3-D and visual effects supervisor Peter
Anderson. In addition Zone interviewed the film's gaffer Dwight Campbell
and Steve Hines of Hineslab in Glendale, California who designed the Iwerks
3-D rig used to shoot the forest sequence of Journey of Man
"Larger Than Life" includes comprehensive and detailed technical
information about all aspects of the stereoscopic cinematography for Journey
of Man which was largely shot with the Imax Solido twin 15/65mm camera. The
new version of the Imax Solido camera uses converging lenses that allow the
director of photography to selectively place part of the action behind the
'stereo window' of the screen, unlike all previous IMAX 3-D films shot with
parallel lenses so that all onscreen action projected out into the audience.
A sidebar is featured with the article titled "Binocular Freevision"
which includes side-by-side stereo pairs of Journey of Man in the making.
These stereo images include a tutorial on freevision by Zone and are
viewable with both cross-eye and parallel techniques. The stereo
photographs were shot by director of photography John Hora with a Nimslo
stereo camera.
American Cinematographer magazine sells for $5.95 at all newsstands and
bookstores in the United States, and is also available in Canada and Europe.
