If you block part of the flash tube, the sensor circuit
will measure less reflected light and increase the time
that the flash fires. Your indoor slides will still be
overexposed.

Try setting the flash at ASA400.
This will reduce the output by 2 f-stops.
Then cover the flash sensor with a neutral density filter
to increase the output again.
