I think you're correct, with some caveats. By the time you see it in the
theatre, a movie has gone through the whole release print procedure,
which does a pretty good job of messing up a lot of things, resolution
being one of them.

You MIGHT be able to discern the difference in resolution between a
digitally manipulated image and the original. I've sat in on tests of
exactly that. It took a good number of go arounds for me to see it.

More likely, the damage of digitizing/compositing/filmout will be in the
area of dynamic range (contrast).
