Just for information:

The motion picture industry uses a film scanning and writing process that
typically is 4k or 8k i.e 4000 lines or 8000 lines for compositing digital
effects with analog location shoots. The big guys, ILM, DreamWorks etc. use
this technology all the time. Any movie made today that has CG effects has
portions, if not all of it, that were digitized and composited with other
digitized scenes as well as digitally created CG effects. I have never
noticed any problems with resolution when whatching movies like Matrix or
Star Wars that made me think that the digitally printed film was not a good
as analog films.

This type of scanning and printing is available at many professional
photolabs. I have used it to make stereopairs, anaglyphs and lenticular
images.
