Oh, I expected this to come up.

Be aware that when you use jpeg compression to tiff, you're losing
information, mostly in the blues. And if you are working on an image,
definitely save it in something other than jpeg - each successive
open/save cycle will degrade the image more and more (unless that's your
artistic decision - I was doing some projects for a class, and I
intentionally did that to get a crunchy/ugly image).

In other words, jpeg is a terrible intermediate format, and an even
worse source format. If you must use jpeg, use it only at the delivery
end (you're not going to mess with the digital image any more).
