I approach base calculations as one of several variables attributing to
a successful shot. Most important is DOF and determining hyperfocal
distances with respect to composition. It's easy to get hung up on near
point-base calculations, but what I tend to see in many stereo images is
great foreground placement and disturbing unresolved backgrounds due to
excessive depth, or poor hyperfocal selection etc. In many cases (
except some macro ) various lens seperations will work fine as "
successful" images, that is they can be viewed and enjoyed whether
ortho, hypo, hyper etc. Most problems occur with poor mechanics after
the base has been determined. Base seperations are more flexible than
other factors IMO. Mark Dottle
