Epson makes other good printers. The two printers that are effected
by the current problem (and it is not know if ozone is the problem,
people in high ozone areas do not have fading problems) are the 870
and the 1270. The other Epson printers use different inks and papers.
Some of the other Epson printers have very nice replacement inks and
papers from third party manufacturers. The Piezographic set (for B&W
printing) from Jon Cone is said to be very nice.
I have a Epson Stylus Photo 750 (replaced by the 870) and it's a nice
printer. Its only problem is that it is connected to my wife's Win95
PC. There is considerable pain involved in working on the images on
my Sun and then transferring them to the PC to be mangled by the image
editting programs and printer drivers for print out.
My next printer will speak Postscript and be directly attached to my
Sun, or to the network (via the lp/lpd protocol).
By the way, the third party organization contracted to test the
870/1270 inks and papers does so for museum environments (which are
better controlled than the home or office). For the environment that
they tested the papers and inks are fine. No one tests for home or
office environments. The standards specify a museum quality
environment. Unfortunately for this ink and paper set the differences
are important.
