This is real easy. Make sure you are in RGB Mode.
Get your edit tool, the one that puts
the rubber band box around an area. Select one side or the
other by drawing a rubberband box around it. Place your cursor
inside the editing area. Hold down the control key and 
slide the outlined image towards the other one. When you
get it where you want it, let go of the mouse button and
click outside the bounding box. When you get the two close
together using the mouse, you can do fine adjustments by 
hitting the up, down, left, and right arrows instead of the
gross movements with the mouse. If you do it this way, 
it all comes out on one layer.
