Actually, it's even easier then that.  Just outline one image with the 
rectangle selection tool, then choose the drag tool to the right of that, 
and drag the rectangle over next to the other image.  Finally, use the 
rectangle selection tool again to select the area around both images, and 
choose Image->Crop
